The inspiration for Pilot Light Wellness may be a bit unconventional, but it actually comes from gas-powered kitchen appliances (of all things)!
A pilot light is a small, continuously-burning, internal flame that acts as the safety mechanism and main source of power for gas-powered appliances, like gas kitchen stoves. Even when these appliances are "off", the pilot light stays lit. It's the internal spark, or the main ignition source that powers-on the whole operation and allows everything to function as it should. And when the pilot light goes out, we've got problems. As small as that internal flame is, the whole operation is rendered functionless without it.
Much like this internal flame, we need to keep our own inner fire stoked and ready. This internal fire fuels our bodies and our livelihoods, provides us with an internal sense of direction, and ultimately keeps us going. When your pilot light is burning low, you *feel* it - burnout, fatigue, sleeplessness, depression, anxiety, disconnection, and maybe even a sense of hopelessness. This feeling is all too familiar in our society that prioritizes and praises hustle culture and "the grind".
We live in a hyper-individualistic society that demands we constantly give of ourselves to fulfill a bottomline, rather than fill our own cups and care for each other. And in this day and age, taking care of ourselves and taking care of each other is of utmost importance. We must consistently check in with ourselves to ensure that our pilot light is burning brightly. And if it's not, we must seek out the practices that will stoke this inner fire.
My goal with Pilot Light Wellness is to provide you with resources and information to help bridge the wellness gap, and to empower you with medicinal and herbal knowledge; to offer a little TLC where I can in the form of community services, and to build connection and community in the process. The way forward is not an individualistic approach to wellness; it's community based.
My roots in medicine are in education. If there's one refrain I've said constantly to students and colleagues, it's this - medicine is a career of service. And I want to share the knowledge I've gained in a way that is accessible in order to serve my community.
